Privacy Policy
Uncorkd ("we", "us", or "our") is built to help you track and enjoy wine. This policy explains what personal data we collect when you use the Uncorkd app (iOS and Android) and website, why we collect it, and what rights you have over it.
We keep things simple: we collect only what we need to run the app, we never sell your data, and we store everything securely on AWS infrastructure.
1. Information We Collect
When you create an account and use Uncorkd, we collect:
- Account details — your username and email address, provided when you sign up.
- Wine logs — ratings, tasting notes, and metadata (wine name, region, vintage, grape variety) for bottles you record.
- Cellar inventory — bottles you mark as in your cellar, including quantities and purchase details you choose to enter.
- Social activity — who you follow and who follows you; wine logs you choose to share with friends.
- Label photos — images you capture when scanning a wine label (stored only for the purpose of identifying the wine).
- Usage data — basic analytics such as app version, device type, and feature interactions, used to improve the app. This data is not linked to your identity.
We do not collect payment information, precise location, or contacts.
2. How We Use Your Data
We use your data solely to operate and improve Uncorkd:
- Providing core app functionality — logging wines, managing your cellar, viewing your stats.
- Enabling the social features — letting friends follow each other and see shared wine logs.
- Sending transactional emails — account verification, password reset, and occasional product updates (you can unsubscribe from non-essential emails at any time).
- Improving the app — aggregate, anonymised usage patterns help us understand which features to build next.
We do not use your data to serve advertising, and we do not sell or rent your data to third parties.
3. Data Storage and Security
Uncorkd is built on AWS Amplify. Your account credentials are managed by Amazon Cognito (a managed identity service). All app data — wine logs, cellar entries, social connections — is stored in AWS AppSync / DynamoDB in a region within the European Union.
Data is encrypted in transit (TLS) and at rest. Access to your data is restricted to authenticated requests from the app using your account credentials.
4. Data Sharing
We share data only in the following limited circumstances:
- With friends you follow / who follow you — wine logs you post are visible to your followers within the app.
- With AWS — as our infrastructure provider. AWS processes data on our behalf and is bound by data processing agreements.
- As required by law — if we are compelled to disclose data by a court order or applicable law, we will do so and will notify you where legally permitted.
5. Your Rights
You have the right to access, correct, or delete your personal data at any time. You can:
- Update your username or email from within the app settings.
- Delete individual wine logs or cellar entries from the app.
- Delete your account directly from the app: go to Profile → Settings → Delete Account. This permanently and immediately removes your account and all associated data.
- Request a data export by emailing us at hello@uncorkd.co. We will respond within 30 days.
If you are located in South Africa, you also have rights under the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA), including the right to lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator (inforeg.org.za). If you are located in the European Economic Area, you have rights under the GDPR, including the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
6. Data Retention
We retain your account data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we remove your personal data from live systems within 30 days. Anonymised, aggregated analytics data (not linked to your identity) may be retained indefinitely.
7. Children
Uncorkd is intended for adults of legal drinking age in their jurisdiction. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under the age of 18. If you believe a minor has created an account, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.
8. Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page and, for material changes, notify you via email or an in-app notice.
